The problem. Fourteen pre-cast box beam joints — seven per side — on the Kipling Avenue bridge at Highway 27 in Etobicoke had to be filled with a minimum 55 MPa non-shrink grout as part of the Metrolinx Georgetown GO corridor expansion. Each joint required approximately 1,025 litres of grout, roughly 14,300 litres in total, and the bridge crossed an active road that had to stay open — and stay clean — throughout.
The repair. The underside of the bridge was caulked and sealed before pumping began so grout could not leak onto the traffic below. The crew mixed and pumped 1,059 bags of Hi-Flow non-shrink precision grout — roughly 16.5 skids of material — moving grout more than 200 feet from the mixing station to the joints. The entire placement was completed in two full days on site.
The result. Approximately 14,600 litres of 55 MPa grout were placed against a 14,300-litre estimate — the kind of volume tracking we bring to every job — and only very minor leaks were encountered during pumping. The grout manufacturer, Euclid Canada, later published the project as a product case study, crediting the workability of the material and the crew for keeping the corridor upgrade on schedule.
